In 2025, several changes to the Hungarian vignette system will come into effect. The most important change is the introduction of the 1-day vignette, which is particularly useful for short-distance trips and transit journeys. Drivers can select the desired day and pay a lower fee than for the 10-day version. The rates have been updated in all categories – including the vignette for motorcycles (D1M), which is now cheaper than for cars. In addition, the list of toll road sections has been expanded – mainly due to newly opened highways. Some urban highways remain toll-free.
Travelling in Hungary? Prepare in advance so you can travel with peace of mind. The first step is to buy a valid motorway sticker - compulsory for both cars and motorcycles. Choose the right type of sticker based on the length of your stay or your planned route. Be informed about current traffic conditions - mobile apps, websites and traffic news can help. The speed limit is 130 km/h on motorways and 50 km/h in built-up areas. Don't forget your compulsory vehicle equipment and always have proof of sticker purchase to hand. In the event of an accident or technical problem, call the European emergency number 112.
Buying a Hungarian motorway sticker online is quick, convenient and easy for anyone. The whole process can be completed in a few minutes, following the steps below:
1. Select the type of vignette – Validity period (e.g. 1 day, 10 days, monthly, yearly) or county vignette.
2. Enter the country of registration and the license plate number of the vehicle – Check the accuracy, as the vignette is linked to the license plate number.
3. Select the start date of validity and enter your email address – The confirmation will be sent to this email address.
4. Check all the details and then make the payment – The most common method is online credit card payment. 5. You will receive confirmation with the vignette details by email – We recommend saving the email or forwarding it to another driver.
No need for a printed sticker. Everything is electronically linked to the number plate, and checks are carried out by cameras on the motorways. Warning: incorrect data (e.g. typos in the number plate) can result in an invalid sticker and possible fines. Please check the data carefully before ordering. Select the sticker, enter the registration number and country, pay online and receive a confirmation e-mail.
In Hungary, all vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are required to have an electronic sticker to use toll motorways and expressways. This applies not only to passenger cars and vans, but also to motorcycles, which fall into a special, reduced category - D1M. Drivers must buy the sticker before entering the toll road. Checks are carried out automatically via a camera system and a penalty may be imposed if the sticker is not valid. A special toll system - the HU-GO - applies to trailers over 3.5 tonnes (e.g. trailers that exceed the weight limit), which are not covered by the standard sticker.
